As we reach the half way point of arguably dreariest month of the year, seeking comfort and joy in the small things is more important than ever. With fewer distractions and a slower tempo, we can recharge our batteries and fully enjoy the pleasures of cooking hearty, nourishing meals, catch up with friends over a coffee or glass of wine, and sit down and reflect on what this new year might bring our way. When we eventually have to venture outside, it will be bundled up in soft jumpers and big fluffy coats whilst daydreaming about the warmth of the sun.

Read MoreI don’t know how many times in 2020 I made these cinnamon buns, but it is definitely one of the few things that I can now proudly add to my baking repertoire. Swedish cinnamon buns (they also have to include cardamom, an unusual ingredient for sweet things in this part of the world) are a traditional treat, usually consumed when having fika - a short break with a coffee and something sweet. Fika is an institution in Sweden and is a chance to catch up with colleagues, family or friends to share a hot drink and a sweet bun or cake, usually more than once a day. My mum even craves a pre-fika around 11 (I guess it’s her version of elevenses) before her proper fika in the afternoon. Anyway, these buns will make a perfect treat with a cup of tea or coffee, and making them is a labour of love so be prepared to devote a few hours in total to create these heavenly cinnamon swirls.

Often referred to as ‘Sweden’s Ibiza’ it has a unique landscape that you cannot find anywhere else in the country. Many of coastlines on the island are made up of shales and limestone rock formations called rauks. The main town on the island is called Visby, an old Hanse trading port with a still mostly intact medieval city wall, cobbled streets and colourful houses. Its a magical place like no other ✨
