Five People On Instagram Who Inspired Me Last Week

FivePeople.jpg

Instagram is an amazing tool for finding inspiration in other peoples creative work, for creating mood boards and even for reaching out to people you admire. As most of us have been confined to our own homes for over three months now, I try to widen my feed as much as I can to bring in different creative elements and viewpoints. These are five people whose feeds and work that have inspired me recently!

RASMUS WENG KARLSEN

Dane Rasmus Weng Karlsen is a recent discovery on my feed, I absolutely love to follow photographers on Instagram. Especially now that we are unable to visit museums and exhibitions, its a real privilege to be able to observe the work of such a variety of creatives online. Rasmus does amazing portraits and there is a sort of muted calm and an almost impromptu style that I love.

AURORA JAMES

Aurora is the founder of @brothervellies, a Brooklyn based brand selling handcrafted sustainable items with artisans spanning from Nairobi to New York. James founded Brother Vellies with the intention of making beautiful handcrafted items available online by supporting communities of colour across the globe. She writes beautiful and insightful texts to go with many of her posts, often highlighting the importance of how we as consumers hold power in where we spend our money.

“Supporting small business right now is more important than ever. We are at a critical fork in the road. The things we actively support with our dollars, our voices, our likes and our votes will live on. The things we don’t will perish. How do we want to see the next chapter of our lives play out? What businesses deserve to keep our attention, whose voices in the chatter have served to lift our spirits?”

HÉLOÏSE SCHWAB

Héloïse Schwab is an Art Director based in Paris and I very recently came across her work and could. Not. Stop. Scrolling. She works with some great people and has an incredible eye, some of her work is reminiscent of Renaissance painted art work. I will definitely keep an eye on her feed.

TESS NEWALL

Tess Newall posted some incredible photos taken by Margaret Courtney Clarke in 1980s. These traditional murals celebrate the rural communities in which the women use the facades of their houses as a canvas for colourful pigments painted into geometrical patterns.

“Clarke spent her childhood was spent in Namibia and she made it her mission to educate people of the breathtaking beauty of African art. These span Mauritiana (Gandega and Soninke) and Burkina Faso (Nankani and Tiébélé). The wall decoration is an ancient practice dating back to the 16th century, always done by women, using clay kaolin and coal”

LUKE EDWARD HALL

There is simply no end to the inspirational content produced by this creative genius - or Whimsical Wunderkind as he was once described in Vogue. His way with colour, composition and mixing mediums is just brilliant. And of course, isolating in a beautiful Cotswold cottage with a blossoming garden and photogenic dog doesn’t exactly set him back. Hall’s feed is very Bright Young Things or straight off the pages of an Oscar Wilde/Evelyn Waugh novel, a style I very much adore.
