Stockholm in September
I am back in London after spending a few restful September weeks in my hometown of Stockholm. This is always my favourite time to go and also when I think the city looks its most beautiful. There is a new freshness to the air coming in from the sea, and the colour of the leaves have just started turning but it doesn't feel like full on autumn yet - you can still pick a bright bouquet of flowers at Rosedahls Trädgård. It is when people still take their Fika (coffee and cinnamon bun for me) outside bundled up in knitted scarves and jumpers, see friends for the seasons last few glasses of rosé or even take a morning swim in the lake before work. This is the time of year to walk everywhere and really enjoy what the city has to offer. These are the places I always come back to when I visit:
- Svenskt Tenn
The holy grail of Swedish design, this interiors shop and design company is known way past the Swedish border thanks to its eclectic mix of high quality design and unique aesthetic. The changing exhibitions on display always makes it worth a visit for a fresh dose of inspiration.
- Rosendals Trädgård
Nestling on the island of Djurgården, this café and market garden is a not-so-hidden gem and a must visit for most locals on the weekend. Go for a lovely walk around the royal park and then settle in for a lunch made from their biodynamic produce or just have a coffee in the orchard under the apple trees. You can also buy fresh vegetables and fruit grown locally, or pick your own flowers to take home with you.
- Nationalmuseum
In my opinion, the best museum in Stockholm. The newly refurbished museum of art and design hosts more than 5000 fascinating objects spanning from the 16th century up to the present day. They proudly host artworks and design pieces from some of Sweden’s most renowned artists such as Anders Zorn, Carl Larsson and Johan Tobias Sergel.
- Schmaltz Delicatessen
Inspired by New York deli culture, Schmaltz its the perfect place to rest your feet after running around in the city. It’s tiny but has a great atmosphere and the loveliest staff. Stop in for a drink with friends or just go on your own - this is a perfect spot for people watching. Treat yourself to the Reuben sandwich or settle for some anchovies on toast and a martini.
- Stadmissionen Second Hand
There are a few of these second hand shops dotted around the city and people rave about them for a reason - here you can find anything from beautiful vintage dresses and blazers to artwork and unique crockery. They have a great selection that is restocked every week, so it’s worth going back a few times to quickly scan the selection on offer.
